Educational company PM Expert has launched a series of free webinars on roles in project management. As part of the series, on April 20, a webinar "Project Manager: Secrets of the Profession" was held. The speaker was the director of the company's practice PM Excellence, Vladimir Baranov, PMP, PRINCE2, PME, MCTS.
Vladimir shared with participants his knowledge of the key functions, skills and competencies that are required to succeed in the role of a project manager. The project manager position includes a range of diverse and cross-functional tasks, from managing processes to prioritizing work. Therefore, special attention was paid to the requirements for specialists, their skills and level of professionalism. Focusing on practice, the expert explained how the uniqueness and scale of the project affect the complexity of the manager's work, as well as the qualification requirements of team members.
Vladimir Baranov also shared his practical experience of PM Excellence on large-scale projects and answered questions from the event participants.
During the webinar, several surveys were conducted, in which over 150 people took part:
-
44% of participants identified leadership skills as the most important competency in the project manager profession. This corresponds to the general trend in the field of project management - a shift in focus towards soft-skills ("soft skills") of working with people.
-
44% of voting participants associate the work of a project manager with the work of an orchestra conductor. Next in the list of associations is agile facilitator (26%). The role of a project manager is associated with the image of a technician and a superhero by 16% and 15%, respectively.
-
When asked about the use of project manager role instructions in companies, only 32% of participants answered positively. A high percentage of participants - 68% - indicated that their organizations do not have the practice of approving role instructions for project managers.
The project manager is a key role in achieving project success. It involves a lot of responsibility, and the project manager needs the appropriate authority. The project manager's role instruction is an effective tool for capturing this balance between responsibility and authority. It is desirable that more companies use this tool.
Such educational webinars help to establish contact between expert practitioners with extensive experience in managing large-scale projects and novice specialists. Thanks to modern means of communication, webinar participants can ask questions to speakers and receive answers in real time. As the organizers note, holding a series of webinars on roles in project management will help young professionals better navigate the profession and choose their path in project management.
For those who were unable to participate in the webinar, there is an opportunity watch it in the recording.
